Soundreef\u2019s Female Artists Join Forces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Gender equality <\/strong>in music!<br \/>\nWe snooped around the internet in search of figures regarding the Music Industry and found out that charts, line-ups of Europe\u2019s most important festivals, playlists of main streaming platforms and even data from Collecting Societies across Europe all say the same thing: <strong>there are far too few active female songwriters and performers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><b>Some of the figures<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Between 2013 and 2018, only 9.3% of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/news\/8096196\/new-report-shows-major-lack-representation-women-music-industry\">Grammy Awards nominees<\/a> were women.<\/li>\n<li>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/01\/25\/arts\/music\/music-industry-gender-study-women-artists-producers.html\">New York Times,<\/a> out of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.womeninmusic.org\/stats.html\">600 most popular songs from<\/a> 2012 to 2017, just <strong>4%<\/strong> were performed by women<\/li>\n<li>In a research conducted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/news\/8096196\/new-report-shows-major-lack-representation-women-music-industry\">Annenberg<\/a> \u2013 <strong>School of Journalism<\/strong> ,in 2017, only 16.8% of all active artists are women.<\/li>\n<li><strong>FIMI charts<\/strong>: in last week\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fimi.it\/top-of-the-music\/classifiche.kl#\/charts\/1\">Top Italian Album<\/a><strong> and <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fimi.it\/top-of-the-music\/classifiche.kl#\/charts\/1\">Top Singles charts<\/a><strong>, <\/strong>women accounted for just <strong>17%<\/strong> and <strong>19%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/szigetfestival.com\/en-int\/programs#!\/plist\/\/\/\/\">Sziget 2019<\/a> line-up: only <strong>4%<\/strong> of performing artists are women.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk\/line-up\/\">Glastonbury 2019<\/a> line-up (main stages): only <strong>26%<\/strong> of performing artists are women.<\/li>\n<li>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cisac.org\/Newsroom\/Articles\/Collective-management-organisations-examine-gender-equality-and-commit-to-action-plan-at-CISAC-General-Assembly\">CISAC<\/a>, only <strong>10%<\/strong> of the <strong>top 100 creators <\/strong>in the world, in terms of revenue generated, are women.<\/li>\n<li>Across Europe\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womeninmusic.org\/stats.html\">Collecting Societies<\/a>, women represent <strong>less than 20%<\/strong> of registered songwriters and composers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Billboard\u2019s HOT 100<\/strong>: in last week\u2019s chart, female artists accounted for only <strong>20%. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Billboard\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/charts\/alternative-songs\">Best Indie-Alternative Songs<\/a>: only <strong>5%<\/strong> is performed by <strong>women. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Only <strong>20<\/strong> out of <strong>Billboard\u2019s top 100 Electronic Artists<\/strong> are female, none of which made the top 20.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Beatport\u2019s <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beatport.com\/genre\/dance\/39\/top-100\">Top 100 Dance Songs<\/a>: only 20% are performed by women<\/li>\n<li><strong>LastFM\u2019s <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.last.fm\/tag\/reggae\/artists?page=3\">Top 100 Reggae Artists<\/a> chart includes <strong>only 7 women. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Why is this happening? But, more importantly, how can we reduce this gap?<br \/>\nWe talked about it with some of Soundreef\u2019s female artists and we decided to join forces to launch a message, or rather, make a wish: <strong>More Women in Music<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>We too want to join those whose objective is to strive for change.<br \/>\nWe want the <strong>Gender Divide <\/strong>to finally be studies have already been conducted on gender equality in the music industry, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisac.org\/Newsroom\/Articles\/Collective-management-organisations-examine-gender-equality-and-commit-to-action-plan-at-CISAC-General-Assembly\">Dr. Pauwke Berkers\u2019<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PauwkeBerkers\/status\/1001740410115493888\">University of Rotterdam<\/a>, which determined that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Women feel they are taken less seriously;<\/li>\n<li>Women have more difficulty promoting themselves;<\/li>\n<li>Slim opportunities to network with other female professionals was discovered;<\/li>\n<li>An income gap exists;<\/li>\n<li>Stereotyping and gender roles remain prominent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To understand the situation more clearly, we talked to <strong>Rosella Sottosanti<\/strong>, founder of <strong>L\u2019Eretico Booking <\/strong>agency, who has worked in the industry for a long time and has a pro-active stance towards the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe common belief that there are very few women in music is a myth: women, both in Europe and around the world, are working in all areas of this industry. Yet, the music industry is still mainly represented by men. This is probably due to mental and cultural barriers: on the one hand, women\u2019s feeling of inadequacy and fear of showing themselves is fueled by a lack of acknowledgment by those who make decisions in this industry. On the other hand, men with power in the industry often spontaneously exclude women. It\u2019s still very difficult for a woman to be taken seriously as an artist or as a professional figure. This is why women who work in the Music Industry should be given more visibility by increasing their numbers in line-ups of important festivals and shows and inviting more female guest speakers to talk in public events.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What are Soundreef\u2019s female artists&#8217; thoughts?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think women are more shy or insecure. We\u2019re slowly moving forward but we have to work even harder, but it\u2019s undeniable that gender stereotypes still persist.\u201d <strong>\u2013 Lady Flavia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think sometimes women have self-limiting beliefs about themselves due to prejudice that is deeply ingrained in our families. Other times, we are determined to fight for our dreams, and due to these pre-conceived prejudices, we know we\u2019ll have to work very hard to prove we are just like men. Women can be anything they want, not just a mother\/wife. However, if they decided to work in music, science or politics they shouldn\u2019t give up being a mother should they wish to and shouldn\u2019t justify themselves should they not wish to. This is true for all sectors. I personally want genders to work together because having different points of view is very important. My band is the perfect example of this. Fortunately, I have never been discriminated against for being woman. Quite the contrary, in fact: Leda was born out of the diversity of its band members. However, it makes me very sad to see that this country still has shockingly backwards views in general, not just on this matter. <strong>\u2013 Serena, lead singer of Leda<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are definitely dealing with negative prejudice. Why? We should ask men that question.\u201d<strong> \u2013 Tita<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who congratulate me after shows often look surprised. They don\u2019t expect a woman to play music that differs from their preconceived stereotypical female artist.\u201d <strong>\u2013 Noireve, EDM producer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my personal experience I\u2019ve never had to deal with what these figures show. I\u2019m actually quite surprised. I think that if you want something, you can achieve it. Let\u2019s get to work and start believing in what we do.\u201d <strong>\u2013 Roberta De Gaetano<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sometimes feel women don\u2019t give their work enough importance. I\u2019d like us to be bolder yet still pragmatic. I\u2019m starting to learn that the creative side is as important as one\u2019s working method\u201d <strong>\u2013 Rosita <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike many other forms of art, music requires discipline, hard work, planning and awareness. In all my years of experience I noticed that sometimes women tend to delegate. Like Man Ray used to say, &#8216;one must first master the rules before one\u2019s able to break them&#8217;\u201d <strong>\u2013 Killing Cartisano <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFemale musicians have to face increasingly tougher challenges. Unfortunately, stereotypes and gender roles are still one of the main problems of our society: they limit our opportunities and makes us more insecure.
